Cannabis gummies with edible glitter get product alert in Ohio

Check your gummies.

The Ohio Division of Cannabis Control issued a product alert for some cannabis-infused edible gummies Tuesday. The Strawberry Banana Local Edibles Ohio Cannabis Infused Gummy was produced by Farmaceutical RX LLC.

“The processor used an ingredient (“edible glitter”) that was not disclosed on the product label nor in the product item registration within the state inventory tracking system,” the division said in a prepared statement. “Additionally, the processor was unable to provide evidence that the ingredient was obtained from a licensed and regulated source.”

Is edible glitter harmful?

According to the division, edible glitter can be used if it is disclosed in the product and properly sourced.

“The presence of the ingredient does not reasonably constitute a health hazard; therefore, a product alert was determined to be the most appropriate course of action,” the division said in a prepared statement.

What is the different between a product alert and a recall?

Because of this, the alert differs from a product recall, but the division recommends consumers who purchased the product to check their labeling to see if their product is included in the alert.

“If it matches, you are urged to discontinue use and either dispose of the remaining product or return it to the dispensary of purchase for proper disposal and refund,” according to the division.

What is edible glitter used for?

Edible glitters are commonly used as a bakery decoration. In 2018, the Food and Drug Administration advised that commercial bakers exercise caution with using glitter products, as some non-edible decorative glitters had been reportedly promoted for use on foods.

“Bakers should carefully check the label of decorative products they consider for use on foods. Companies that make edible glitters and dusts are required by law to include a list of ingredients on the label,” according to the FDA. “Most edible glitters and dusts also state ‘edible’ on the label. If the label simply says ‘non-toxic’ or ‘for decorative purposes only’ and does not include an ingredients list, the product should not be used directly on foods.”
