Governor Josh Stein said North Carolina needs to place stricter regulations on intoxicating cannabis to protect adult consumers while making it harder for minors to buy.
Stein plans to tackle those issues by launching a new advisory council.
They’ll explore what the state’s policy should be on products that contain cannabis.
Stein said he is in favor of marijuana legalization, but that he wants to hear more from the people on that new council.
“Because the world is different today in 2025 than it was five years ago, because these vape shops are everywhere, because there are story after story of teenagers just like you described getting there buying these products, consuming these products and having terrible physical and psychological responses,” Gov. Josh Stein said.
Stein said he is also considering steps to erase some people’s criminal records for minor marijuana offenses.
The governor called them a barrier for people’s successful participation in life.
