Cannabis found in popular candy in one country

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Haribo has issued a recall in the Netherlands after traces of cannabis were discovered in several packages of its popular Happy Cola F!ZZ gummies, the German candy company confirmed this week.

Dutch health authorities launched an investigation after a family in the Twente region reported feeling dizzy and unwell following consumption of the cola-flavored gummies. Tests revealed the presence of cannabis in three one-kilogram bags of the product.

Haribo has since pulled the affected items from shelves and is urging consumers not to eat the sweets. The recall applies to one-kilogram bags of Happy Cola F!ZZ with a best-before date of January 2026 and production code L341-4002307906.

“We are taking this incident extremely seriously,” a spokesperson for the Dutch office told local media. “The investigation concerns a limited number of reports and one specific product in the east of the country. As a precaution, we have started a recall.”

The Netherlands Forensic Institute is investigating the cola bottle candies.

Officials from the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) are investigating the incident and working with law enforcement. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of product tampering or counterfeit items entering the supply chain.

“We want to know exactly how this got into the candy,” police spokesperson Chantal Westerhoff said. “And how the bags ended up in the store.”

Haribo said the issue appears to be isolated to the Netherlands and confirmed that products in other countries, including the United States, are not affected.
