Worker reportedly dies after immigration raid on farm – DW – 07/12/2025

A farm worker reportedly died on Friday from injuries sustained during raids by US immigration officers at a cannabis farm in California the day before.

The United Farm Workers labor union said in a post on X on Friday that the worker had “died of injuries they sustained as a result of yesterday’s immigration enforcement action.”

During the raid, approximately 200 undocumented migrants were arrested, the authorities said.

Meanwhile, Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokeswoman, stated that the man who died had not been arrested.

“Although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, this individual climbed up to the roof of a green house and fell 30 feet (10 meters),” McLaughlin said.

“(Customs and Border Patrol) immediately called a medivac to the scene to get him care as quickly as possible,” she added.

Trump’s latest crackdown on immigrants

The raids are part of US President Donald Trump‘s latest efforts to deport immigrants living in the United States illegally.

The events on a cannabis farm triggered protests and clashes with federal agents in rural Southern California on Thursday.

Trump called the demonstrators involved in attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents “slimeballs” and said they should be arrested.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he was authorizing law enforcement officers who are “on the receiving end of thrown rocks, bricks, or any other form of assault, to stop their car, and arrest these SLIMEBALLS, using whatever means is necessary to do so.”

Separately, a federal judge in California ordered the Trump administration to temporarily pause some of its most aggressive tactics to arrest undocumented immigrants.

The judge issued two temporary restraining orders that blocked the administration from detaining immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally based on racial profiling, as well as from denying detained individuals the right to speak with a lawyer.

California National Guard troops face off with protestors during a Federal Immigration raid on Glass House Farms in Camarillo, California, July 10, 2025. Federal immigration agents—backed by CBP, Border Patrol units, National Guard troops, helicopters, and military style vehicles—raided Glass House Farms in Camarillo early July 10, 2025, targeting state licensed cannabis and other crop operations, detaining between a dozen and 100 farmworkers, and deploying smoke or tear gas canisters and rubber bullets to disperse a crowd of several hundred protesters on Laguna Road. A California farm worker died from injuries sustained when US immigration agents raided a cannabis operation and arrested hundreds of workers, according to a farm worker advocacy group.

Separately, a federal judge in California ordered the Trump administration to temporarily halt some of its most aggressive tactics in rounding up undocumented immigrants.

Dozens of migrant-rights activists faced off with federal agents in rural Southern California on Thursday (local time) in the latest escalation of President Donald Trump’s campaign for mass deportations of immigrants in the US illegally.

His administration had made conflicting statements about whether immigration agents would target the farm labour workforce, about half of which was unauthorised to work in the US, according to government estimates.

The Department of Homeland Security said about 200 people in the country illegally were arrested in the raid, which targeted two locations of the cannabis operation Glass House Farms.

Agents also found 10 migrant minors at the farm, the department said in an emailed statement.

The facility is under investigation for child labour violations, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott posted on X.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The scene at the farm was chaotic, with federal agents in helmets and face masks using tear gas and smoke canisters on angry protesters, according to photos and videos of the scene.

Several farm workers were injured and one died on Friday from injuries sustained after a nine-metre fall from a building during the raid, said United Farm Workers national vice president .

Elizabeth Strater.

The worker who died was identified as Jaime Alanis on a verified GoFundMe page created by his family, who said they were raising money to help his family and for his burial in Mexico.

“He was his family’s provider,” Alanis’ family wrote on the GoFundMe page. “They took one of our family members – we need justice.”

US citizens were detained during the raid and some are still unaccounted for, Strater said.

DHS said its agents were not responsible for the man’s death, saying that “although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, this individual climbed up to the roof of a green house and fell 30 feet”.

Agents immediately called for a medical evacuation, DHS said.

Warnings on food supply

California Rural Legal Assistance, which provides legal services and other support to farm workers, was working on picking up checks for detained Glass House workers, said directing attorney Angelica Preciado.

Some Glass House workers detained during the raid were only able to call family members after they signed voluntary deportation orders and were told they could be jailed for life, because they worked at a cannabis facility, Preciado said.

DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin rejected those allegations, saying “allegations that ICE or CBP agents denied detainees from calling legal assistance are unequivocally false”.

Some detained citizen workers reported only being released from custody, after deleting photos and videos of the raid from their phones, UFW President Teresa Romero said.

“These violent and cruel federal actions terrorise American communities, disrupt the American food supply chain, threaten lives and separate families,” Romero said.

Farm groups have warned that mass deportation of farm workers would cripple the country’s food supply chain.

In her most recent comments, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said there would be “no amnesty” for farm workers from deportation, but Trump has said migrant workers should be permitted to stay on farms.

US District Court Judge Maame Frimpong granted two temporary restraining orders blocking the administration from detaining immigrants suspected of being in the country illegally based on racial profiling and from denying detained people the right to speak with a lawyer.

The ruling, made in response to a lawsuit from immigration advocacy groups, says the administration is violating the Fourth and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution by conducting “roving patrols” to sweep up suspected undocumented immigrants based on their being Latinos, and then denying them access to lawyers.

“What the federal government would have this Court believe – in the face of a mountain of evidence presented in this case – is that none of this is actually happening,” Frimpong wrote in her ruling.

Chaotic ICE raid at cannabis farm: About 200 arrested, one farmworker dies in fall

Chaotic ICE raid at cannabis farm: About 200 arrested, one farmworker dies in fall

Federal immigration agents carried out immigration sweeps at two Southern California cannabis farms on Thursday, arresting about 200 suspected undocumented immigrants and prompting a heated standoff between authorities and hundreds of protesters at a Ventura County site and reports of a farmworker being critically injured.

Videos shared on social media showed nearly a dozen agents using so-called less-lethal ammunition on a crowd that had gathered near Glass House Farms, a large, licensed cannabis greenhouse in Camarillo. Meanwhile, 35 miles up the coast in Carpinteria, federal agents entered another Glass House Farms growing site, where a smaller crowd gathered around the perimeter.

The United Farm Workers union said it was told one worker fell several stories from a greenhouse at the Camarillo location. On Friday morning, UFW official Elizabeth Strater said the person was taken from the Ventura County farm by ambulance.

The UFW later said the worker died. But on Friday afternoon, a local hospital said he was critically injured.

The worker’s name was not released, and local law enforcement officials could not immediately provide any details.

Andrew Dowd, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Fire Department, confirmed that eight people were transported from in and around the Camarillo facility Thursday afternoon to local hospitals for injuries. He said he did not have information on the extent of those injuries or their current status. Dowd said an additional four people were treated at the scene for minor injuries. He said he did not know how many were injured in the facility or outside at the related protest.

U.S. Atty. Bill Essayli confirmed in a statement on X that federal agents had executed a search warrant at a marijuana farm. He said they arrested several individuals on suspicion of impeding the operation and warned that people who continued to interfere would be arrested and charged with a federal offense.

A spokesperson for the FBI said the agency was investigating a shooting that occurred during the operation in Camarillo. Video captured by ABC7 News appeared to show a protester opening fire at federal immigration agents after smoke canisters were thrown to disperse the crowd.

Ten minors without documentation were found at the farm during the raid, eight of whom were unaccompanied, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott said in a statement on X. The facility is now under investigation for child labor violations, he said.

Cesar Ortiz, 24, told a Times photographer in Spanish that his brother works at the farm and was detained and being held in a hot container without air conditioning.

“They are taking everyone and the truth is it’s not right because these people come to work, struggle every day, to earn for bread every day,” he said. “It feels like they are against us but there are no narcos here, no one is armed here and they come fully armed, full of military personnel.”

The Ventura County Fire Department was dispatched around 12:15 p.m. to provide medical aid as a result of federal enforcement activity along Laguna Road in Camarillo, according to agency spokesperson Andrew Dowd. Five patients were taken to hospitals for treatment and four were treated on the scene.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the area to assist with traffic control but were not involved in any way with the federal operation, he said. Dowd also noted that the Fire Department has no connection with any federal immigration enforcement actions and will never ask for a patient’s immigration status.

“There’s so many family and friends who work here at the Glass House Factory, it’s a huge factory. … We were notified that the people working inside were all being detained, whether they were U.S. citizens or not,” said Angelmarie Taylor, who is with the 805 Immigration Coalition, a volunteer organization that tracks immigration activity by federal agents.

About 500 people gathered near the farm to protest during the day, according to Taylor. As of around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, about 200 protesters remained at the site where around 40 troops, some holding shields, and agents made a stand.

Marc Cohodes, an investor and famed short-seller who has invested in Glass House, called the raid “beyond outrageous.”

“The government is aware of cartels, illicit crime, the whole thing and yet, and yet, they decide to spend their resources going after a total legal company that pays the state of California hundreds of millions of dollars excise tax,” he said.

He added that Glass House is “the largest cannabis cultivator in the world” and “a highly regulated business fully licensed by the state of California,” with a site in Ventura County and another in Santa Barbara County. “It’s run by a guy named Kyle Kazan, who is an ex-cop who plays by the rules and does things by the book.” Kazan, he added, is also a supporter of President Trump.

Ortiz, whose brother was detained Thursday, said he had a message for Trump: “We all have a right to come here and work. Here, we all have a dream, we have to give it our all.”

Farther north in Carpinteria, U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara) attempted to enter the marijuana farm after hearing reports of an immigration operation but was not let past the masked federal agents agents who formed a perimeter along the road about 75 yards from the raid.

“It was disproportionate, overkill,” Carbajal said. “These tactics are creating an incendiary, hostile environment the way they are being deployed, which could lead to, regrettably, violence in the future.”

He identified himself as a Congress member conducting oversight but said he was told to contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and was turned away. A crowd had gathered around the perimeter, but he said they dispersed after agents wrapped up and boarded a military-style vehicle.

Aerial views of the scene in Camarillo taken by news helicopters showed dozens of workers sitting in the shade alongside a warehouse, with federal agents standing guard.

Protesters blocked the roads in and out, and at one point federal agents drove their vehicles through the fields. Multiple ambulances had gone in and out of the facility, Taylor said.

Sarah Armstrong, outreach chair with Americans for Safe Access, said it appeared that Homeland Security and the U.S. National Guard were at the location firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the Camarillo protesters.

Lucas Zucker, co-executive director of Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy, or CAUSE, said Thursday that the organization had staffers on the ground after reports of a raid at Glass House, but he asked them to leave once federal agents started deploying tear gas.

The vast area is largely remote farmland, Zucker said, and the use of rubber bullets and tear gas on a small crowd was “pretty unusual.”

“I don’t think there’s any credible case that they were under threat,” he said, describing the scene as “a small crowd of community members … in pretty remote agricultural areas.”

He added that Glass House had been targeted by immigration authorities in the past couple of months, including when federal agents began conducting workplace raids in the region in June. Numerous videos on social media showed agents chasing after farmworkers and making mass arrests at farms.

Glass House Farms said in a post on X that the company was “visited today by ICE officials” and “fully complied with agent search warrants.” The statement said nothing else, except to add that the company would “provide further updates if necessary.”

Zucker said Ventura County saw a drop in worksite raids after an intense week in June, when community members mobilized to the fields and began patrolling farmlands. For the last few weeks, he said, they’ve received reports of raids in more suburban areas, including Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks. This raid represented the first major workplace raid in the region since then.

In a social media post, Oxnard Mayor Luis McArthur said he was “in communication with emergency services to ensure that safety personnel are on standby and ready to provide immediate assistance if necessary.”

“While this matter is taking place outside the jurisdiction of Oxnard, I am increasingly mindful that many of the facility’s employees are likely from Oxnard and are seeking refuge in their vehicles amid the high temperatures, raising concerns about the safety and well-being of those individuals,” he said.

He then commented on the broader strategy apparent from the raids across the Southland.

“It is becoming increasingly apparent that the actions taken by ICE are bold and aggressive, demonstrating insensitivity toward the direct impact on our community. These actions are causing unnecessary distress and harm. I remain committed to working alongside our Attorney General and the Governor’s office to explore potential legal avenues to address these activities.”

Tom Homan, Trump’s border advisor, criticized the protests.

“What happened in California is just another example of protesters becoming criminals, and they’ve been emboldened by even members of Congress who compare ICE to Nazis and racists and terrorists,” Homan told Fox News.

Freelance photographer Julie Leopo and staff writer Grace Toohey contributed to this report.

New CU study finds nearly half of cannabis flower products inaccurately labeled

New CU study finds nearly half of cannabis flower products inaccurately labeled

DENVER — Nearly half of cannabis flower products sold in Colorado are inaccurately labeled, according to a new University of Colorado Boulder study.

The study analyzed 277 products ,including 178 flower products and 99 smokeable concentrates. It was funded by the Institute of Cannabis Research, the state’s official cannabis research institute, and conducted in collaboration with MedPharm Research, LLC, a licensed cannabis testing facility, manufacturer and retailer.

“We found that cannabis product labels, particularly on cannabis flower products, were frequently inaccurately labeled, so beyond greater than a 15% deviation,” CU Boulder senior professional research assistant Greg Giordano said. “These products, were frequently over labeled, so that the value that was on their label was often higher than what was actually in the product.”

According to researchers, products were considered “accurately labeled” if they contained within 15% of the THC amount shown on the label — the same threshold the state uses. About 44% percent of flower products failed to meet that standard, with 54 of those products inflating their THC content and 23 containing more THC than the label indicated. Only four concentrate products were labeled inaccurately.

Giordano said the inaccurate labeling can lead to several issues for consumers and public health research.

“From a consumer perspective, so recreational users, or we have medical cannabis users who use for a variety of reasons, in terms of understanding the amount of THC that’s in their product, it’s important that those labels are accurate. And then also from the public health and researcher perspective. In order to put out accurate public health statements about potential risks or potential benefits of these products, we need to, you know, again, understand what’s actually in them,” Giordano said.

Because CU Boulder is a federally funded institution, Giordano said researchers could not handle or purchase cannabis, so they collaborated with MedPharm.

“They helped us do this study by going around to dispensaries all across the state, purchasing cannabis flower and products and performing those analyzes, cannabinoid analyzes for THC in a blinded fashion. They would take pictures of the products and send us the data, and we merge the data from the labels with the analysis that was performed, and so we did the actual scientific analysis for the project,” Giordano said. “ In Colorado, the total THC and total CBD is what’s required to be on cannabis product labels. We also looked at a variety of minor cannabinoids, things like CBG and CBGa, CBC, all these other cannabinoids that we’re also trying to understand.”

CBG and CBGA, have been associated with anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties, and were more abundant than CBD in products across categories.

How to Choose a Reliable Online Cannabis Dispensary

When searching for a dependable online cannabis dispensary, consider the following factors:

1. Product Quality

Choose dispensaries that source their cannabis from reputable growers and provide detailed product descriptions. For instance, Area 52 emphasizes premium, lab-tested products derived from high-quality hemp.

2. Customer Reviews

Look for positive feedback regarding product efficacy and service reliability. Royal CBD has garnered favorable reviews, reflecting customer satisfaction.

3. Third-Party Lab Testing

Ensure the dispensary offers lab results confirming product purity and potency. Finest Labs provides transparent lab reports, underscoring their commitment to quality assurance.

4. Licensing & Compliance

Verify that the dispensary operates legally within its state and adheres to all regulations. Compliance with state laws ensures that products meet safety and quality standards.

Legal Considerations: A Look at Federal & State Laws

Buying cannabis online can be convenient, but you need to know the legal landscape before placing an order. While federal and state laws both apply, they don’t always align.

Federal Law & the Farm Bill

Under federal law, cannabis (marijuana) is still classified as a Schedule I drug, meaning it’s considered to have a high potential for abuse and no accepted medical use. This hasn’t changed as of 2024, which is why most cannabis sales are regulated at the state level.

However, the 2018 Farm Bill made an important legal distinction between cannabis plants:

  • Cannabis plants containing less than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight are classed as hemp and legalized on the federal level.

  • Any cannabis plants or products above 0.3% delta-9 THC are classified as marijuana and federally controlled.

Many online dispensaries primarily sell hemp-based products to conform to federal law.

State Laws Vary Widely

Each state sets its own rules for cannabis sales and use. As of 2024, 38 states allow medical cannabis24 states permit recreational use [2]. Some states limit purchases to specific dispensaries, while others ban THC products altogether, especially those that are psychoactive.

Age Limits & Purchase Restrictions

Most states require customers to be 21 or older for recreational cannabis and 18+ for medical use. States may also set purchase limits, restricting how much THC or CBD a person can buy in a single visit or within a certain time frame.

Expect ID Checks at Checkout

To stay compliant, legit online dispensaries will verify your age and identity before completing a sale. If a platform doesn’t ask for ID, it’s a red flag — and it may not be operating legally.

Dispensary Quality Assurance Practices

Trustworthy dispensaries don’t just promise quality — they prove it. These practices help protect you from low-grade or unsafe cannabis products:

1. Lab Testing

Every product should be tested by a third-party lab for contaminants like pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents. Look for COAs (Certificates of Analysis) that are linked on each product page. These reports confirm potency and safety and should be easy to access.

Tip: If a brand doesn’t display COAs, skip it. Reputable dispensaries include batch-specific test results on every product page.

2. Certifications

Top brands often hold GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) or ISO certifications. These standards ensure the products are made in clean, regulated environments. GMP badges or ISO details are typically listed in the footer, About page, or FAQ section.

If there’s no mention of manufacturing standards, that’s a sign to do more research — or consider a more transparent dispensary.

3. Product Sourcing

High-quality dispensaries are upfront about where their hemp or cannabis comes from. You should see clear sourcing information — like U.S.-grown organic hemp or specific farm regions — listed on either the product or brand page.

If a dispensary doesn’t mention lab tests, certifications, or sourcing practices, don’t guess. Choose a provider that shows you exactly what you’re getting.

Range of Products Available in Dispensaries

Online dispensaries typically offer a wide range of cannabis products to match different needs and preferences:

  • Flowers — Dried cannabis buds available in sativa, indica, or hybrid strains. They can be rich in cannabinoids like delta-8 THC, THCA, or CBD.

  • Vapes — Either vape cartridges that you can attach to your own battery, or disposable all-in-one pens. They come in a variety of strains and cannabinoid formulations, including delta-8, delta-10, THCA, and THCP.

  • Edibles — Food items such as gummies, chocolates, and drinks infused with cannabinoids like delta-8, delta-9, or full-spectrum CBD.

  • Oils/Tinctures: Liquid cannabinoid formulations designed to either be placed under the tongue or taken with food or drink.

  • Concentrates — Potent extracts like wax, shatter, and oils that offer fast, strong effects. These often contain high levels of THC or other rare cannabinoids like THCP or HHC.

  • Topicals — Creams, balms, and patches applied to the skin. These usually contain CBD or a blend of cannabinoids for localized relief without intoxication.

Choose a product that aligns with your needs. For example, if you want something fast-acting, go for flowers or vapes. For therapeutic results, try an oil, tincture, or gummy.

Online Dispensary Shipping & Delivery Policies

Before placing an order, it’s important to understand how your dispensary handles shipping and delivery.

Shipping times and costs vary by brand — some offer free shipping once your order hits a minimum amount, while others charge a flat rate.

Reputable dispensaries will also use discreet, unmarked packaging to protect your privacy.

Another key factor is state compliance. Not all dispensaries can legally ship to every state, even if the products are hemp-derived. That’s because each state has its own rules on cannabis and THC delivery.

Always check your state’s laws and the dispensary’s shipping FAQ before checking out. If a dispensary isn’t transparent about shipping restrictions or costs, that’s a red flag.

Online Dispensary Customer Service & Support

Effective customer support enhances the shopping experience. You don’t want to shop somewhere that isn’t looking out for you!

Here are some key things to look out for:

  • Support Channels — Reliable dispensaries offer assistance via live chat, email, and phone.

  • Response Times — Prompt replies indicate good customer service. While some companies may offer 24-hour support, others may only be available during standard working hours.

  • Return/Exchange Policies — Familiarize yourself with these policies; some dispensaries have strict no-return rules due to the nature of the products.

To check a dispensary’s support quality, start by reading verified customer reviews on trusted sites like Trustpilot or Google. Look for mentions of quick response times, helpful staff, and easy returns.

Most dispensaries post their support hours and return policies on their website’s FAQ or Help Center section. If it’s hard to find or missing entirely, you might want to give them a wide berth.

Online Dispensary Pricing & Discounts

Online dispensary prices can vary more than you’d expect. A little research goes a long way in finding the best value, especially when factoring in shipping, taxes, and available discounts.

1. Price Comparison

Not all price tags tell the full story. Some states, like Illinois, apply heavy cannabis taxes, raising costs by up to 89% above the national average. When comparing dispensaries, always consider the total price, including shipping fees, and whether the brand justifies its cost with verified quality.

For example, Area 52 focuses on high-potency, clean-label formulas. Its prices reflect this premium positioning, but you can save 15% with code FIRST15 on your first order.

2. Loyalty Programs

Some brands reward you just for coming back. Royal CBD’s loyalty program lets you earn points with every purchase and redeem them later for discounts — an ideal perk if you use CBD consistently for pain or stress support.

3. First-Time Buyer Discounts & Promotions

Look for welcome offers and seasonal sales. Brands like Finest Labs offer 10% off with code FINEST and run promotions on popular items like delta-8 tinctures or gummies. These discounts can make it easier to try a new product without paying full price.

Tip: Sign up for email alerts. Many dispensaries announce flash sales and bundle deals to subscribers first.

Frequently Asked Questions: Online Dispensaries

Below, we answer the most commonly asked questions about online dispensaries to help you shop with confidence.

1. Is It Legal to Buy Cannabis Online from Another State?

It depends. Hemp-derived products may be legal to purchase across state lines, but this varies by state. However, marijuana cannot legally cross state lines, even between states where it’s legal. Always check local laws before ordering.

2. What Should I Look for When Choosing an Online Dispensary?

To ensure a great experience, look for these factors when choosing a dispensary:

  • A wide variety of high-quality products

  • Transparent third-party lab testing results

  • Positive customer reviews

  • Clear and reasonable shipping policies

3. Can I Return Cannabis Products If I’m Not Satisfied?

Most dispensaries don’t accept returns due to strict regulations, but some may offer exchanges or store credit. Always review the dispensary’s return policy before making a purchase.

4. How Do I Know If an Online Dispensary Is Legitimate?

Look for these key indicators:

  • State licensing for compliance

  • Third-party lab results proving product quality

  • Secure payment methods that are safeguarded by encryption

5. Are There Any Restrictions on the Types of Cannabis Products I Can Order Online?

Yes. Some states have rules limiting what you can buy online, such as prohibiting edibles or capping THC percentages. Check your local laws to avoid any legal issues.

6. How Long Does Delivery Typically Take for Online Cannabis Orders?

Delivery times depend on the dispensary and your location. Most offer standard shipping within three to seven business days. Want it sooner? Many dispensaries also offer expedited shipping at an additional cost.

7. Do Online Dispensaries Ship Discreetly?

Absolutely. Dispensaries usually use plain packaging with no markings or indications of the product inside. This ensures both privacy and compliance with shipping rules.

8. What Payment Methods Are Accepted by Online Cannabis Dispensaries?

Common payment methods include:

  • Credit or debit cards

  • Bank transfers

  • Cryptocurrency

Due to federal restrictions, some dispensaries may also use alternative options, like e-checks or cash-on-delivery.

9. Can I Track My Cannabis Delivery Once It’s Shipped?

Yes. Most dispensaries provide tracking details via email after your order has been dispatched. You’ll be able to track your package and know when it’s arriving.

10. Is There a Minimum Purchase Amount for Online Cannabis Orders?

Yes, many dispensaries set minimum purchase requirements to qualify for shipping. These typically range between $50 and $100, so it’s worth planning your orders accordingly.

Witnesses Claim Immigration Raid Officials at Callifornia Cannabis Farm ‘Came As If They Were Going to War’

Federal immigration agents executed a large-scale raid Thursday at Glass House Farms, a licensed cannabis facility in Camarillo, California, prompting a day-long standoff with hundreds of protesters and grabbing headlines at the national level.

The operation— one of two simultaneous raids along another one in Carpinteria —unfolded as federal agents in tactical gear blocked roads, fired crowd-control munitions, and deployed gas canisters.

Protesters, family members, and former employees gathered outside the facility, with some being hit by projectiles or hospitalized due to exposure to gas. According to the Ventura County Fire Department, at least five individuals were transported to area hospitals, with others treated on site.

A witness interviewed by Telemundo, who asked not to be named, described the scene:

“They were all armed. They had long guns. Helmets and everything. They even had gas tanks. They came as if they were going to war. And they told us not to say anything, that we shouldn’t tell anyone afterwards that they were mistreating us. But I’m not going to stay silent”

Federal authorities added that 10 undocumented minors were found working at the Camarillo facility, eight of whom were unaccompanied. The farm is now under investigation for potential child labor violations, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott.

U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed in a statement on X that a federal search warrant was executed at the site and warned that interfering with law enforcement could lead to prosecution.:

Glass House Farms confirmed the raids in a brief statement, saying the company complied with search warrants and would provide updates as needed.

As protests continued into the evening, calls for accountability grew. Rep. Salud Carbajal, turned away from the perimeter by agents, called the tactics “disproportionate,” while others echoed concerns over the impact on immigrant communities. Oxnard Mayor Luis McArthur stated through a Facebook post that ICE’s actions were “bold and aggressive,” causing “unnecessary distress and harm.”

Canadian cannabis firm terminates CFO ‘without cause’

Canadian cannabis firm terminates CFO ‘without cause’

This audio is auto-generated. Please let us know if you have feedback.

Canopy Growth, a cannabis company publicly traded in Canada and the United States, on Wednesday terminated its finance chief, Judy Hong, “without cause.”

In a July 9 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, company officials said Hong has been terminated, effective immediately. Canopy Growth noted the move is “not related to the company’s financial or operating results or to any disagreements or concerns regarding the company’s financial or reporting practices.”

The news comes as Canopy Growth faces an ongoing class action lawsuit brought by investors who claim the company misled them on the business’s prospects. The suit, filed in April 2025 in the U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of New York, names Canopy Growth, former CEO Bruce Baron and Hong as defendants. Plaintiffs allege the company downplayed the costs of launching a new line of joints and acquiring a vaporizer company.

Canopy Growth officials said Hong’s termination has nothing to do with the class action suit. “Judy Hong’s departure was not related to performance or to any ongoing legal matters,” the company said in an email.

A Goldman Sachs alum, Hong first joined Canopy Growth as vice president of investor relations in December 2019, according to her LinkedIn page. By November 2021, she was promoted to interim CFO. She took on the position permanently in March 2022.

In a news release, Canopy Growth officials spoke positively of Hong’s tenure at the firm, noting she “played a key role in improving the company’s capital structure and significantly strengthening its financial position.”

“Canopy Growth thanks Ms. Hong for her leadership and support of its strategic vision,” the company said in the release.

The company has appointed Tom Stewart, previously vice president of finance, to serve as interim CFO. In an email, Canopy Growth said his appointment “aligns with our focus on operational efficiency and disciplined capital management.”

Canopy Growth has struggled to maintain profitability, having recorded six-figure net losses in each of the last two fiscal years. Shares of the company are traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canada and Nasdaq in the United States. Cannabis businesses face a unique set of challenges in the United States. For one, section 280E of the Internal Revenue Code prohibits companies that deal with federally controlled substances from deducting business expenses, complicating the effective tax rates for cannabis firms.

In some cases, growing market saturation has led to mass job losses in the industry, too, MJBizDaily reported last month.
