LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Witnesses reported seeing a man accused of driving under the influence in a deadly crash try to hide receipts cannabis vape pens in a nearby bush, according to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police report.
Daniel Stakleff, 38, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and reckless driving resulting in death near Warm Springs Road and Torrey Pines Drive on Tuesday, May 6.
LVMPD alleged he jumped a sidewalk and hit Joree Odabi, 23, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
In their arrest report, police wrote that they found video of the crash showing Stakleff driving a Volkswagen Passat and hitting Odabi from behind while Odabi was on the sidewalk.
The Volkswagen then hit a light pole on the sidewalk before re-entering the street. It crossed all three travel lanes and came to a stop on the center median.
Stakleff is seen in the video getting out of the driver’s seat and reaching into the driver’s side floorboard area. The video shows him taking items from that area and drops a dispensary bag in nearby landscaping, according to the report. A detective found the bag, which contained purchase receipts for marijuana vape pens.
Police wrote that Stakleff failed some of his field sobriety tests and a blood draw warrant was granted. Officers also found an empty cannabis vape cartridge in the floorboard area of his car.
Court records indicate Stakleff is currently being held without bail at Clark County Detention Center. A status check on a criminal complaint filing is scheduled for Monday, May 12.
