Region’s cannabis rules take shape

The state of Minnesota continues to move closer to offering the legal sale and production of cannabis products.

However, the process for a business to become licensed will be lengthy and potentially costly.

Cottonwood County Planning and Zoning Officer Alex Schultz said the county has its ordinance to govern cannabis sales in place and that most cities in the county are either using the same guidelines as the county or have made slight modifications.

“I know that Windom and Mt. Lake have slight changes because of the proximity of their business districts to parks and schools,” Schultz said. “The state gave a template, which was incorporated into what the county had previously acted on. Mainly, the template had to do with land use and requirements for cannabis businesses.

“From the county’s standpoint, a cannabis business would either need a conditional use permit or a regular permit, depending on how the land is zoned.”
