This week, Chaz Wolfe is joined by Dan Nelson, a multi-business owner in commercial construction and Medical Cannabis in Kansas City. Being an entrepreneur isn’t always the healthiest way to live. Still, as we garner knowledge and create different avenues for ourselves, we create opportunities to help our families differently. 

Dan has a “carpenter dad,” a union carpenter who took Dan under his wing when he was younger and saw him through many of his struggles. Dan owes a lot to that individual and, in turn, has several younger employees in his own business that he works hard to mentor and give back in the same way. When he put the team together for the Cannabis company, he reiterated to everyone that there’s no hierarchy on the corporate side. And because of that trust, people like to work with him. 

Dan recommends not waiting. People can sit there and ho-hum about when the best time to start is, but one of the best decisions he ever made was to take that jump. Dan doesn’t have a business degree. He learned along the way and made a lot of hard mistakes. That’s just part of the journey. 

Dan’s biggest metric is tracking the number of people you’ve successfully helped. The Medical Cannabis side of his business is about helping people, which is very special. The customer service side of things is more in his construction business. So focusing on cultivating that trust with your customers is a key metric for measuring success.
