Cypress Hill performs “Rise Up” live on during Lollapalooza in 2010
Three decades before the Latin hip-hop explosion of 2018, B-Real, Sen Dog, and DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill sparked a trip that left popular culture stoned, stunned, and staggering in anticipation for more. In 1988, Sen Dog, B-Real, and DJ Muggs certainly didn’t look like any other hip-hop collective, sound like anything on the radio, or smoke like any homie, headbanger, hesher, or hippie. Instead, they rolled up intense rhymes, hard rock attitude, smoked-out psychedelic production, and Latin swagger into a one-of-a-kind strain on the legendary double-platinum Cypress Hill in 1991. Not to mention, they made history as “the first Latino American hip-hop recording group to go platinum.”

“Insane in the Brain” is a 1993 single by the American hip hop group Cypress Hill. In addition to hitting number one on the US rap chart, the song also was a mainstream hit, reaching number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1993. It earned a gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America and sold 600,000 copies domestically. The song was released on the group’s Black Sunday album.
The popular lyric “Insane in the membrane” is sometimes confused for the title.
According to B-Real, the song was actually a diss song aimed at Chubb Rock. The group felt Chubb had ridiculed their style on his 1992 album I Gotta Get Mine Yo.
It is claimed that DJ Muggs produced the song “Jump Around” by House of Pain, which was later used to produce this song, with minor changes.
The song is built around many samples: a repeating sample of a horse from Mel and Tim’s “Good Guys Only Win in the Movies”; a drum break from organist George Semper’s cover version of Lee Dorsey’s “Get Out of My Life, Woman”; a sample of James Brown grunting from the opening of his song “Say It Loud – I’m Black and I’m Proud”; a sample of the line “insane in the brain” from Cypress Hill’s own song “Hole in the Head”; the opening keyboard from Sly & the Family Stone’s “Life” and a sample of the line “I think I’m going crazy” from The Youngbloods’ “All Over the World (La La),” which concludes the track. In 2007, it was ranked number 85 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the 90’s.
According to a live interview aired on Double J during a feature of the Black Sunday album, ‘insane in the membrane’ was a localised gang term used at the time by the Crips when doing something crazy. It was then appropriated into this song. The interview also notes that B-Real was a member of the Bloods.

Lyrics:
All you killers Devil’s gotten
I’m the guardian on this throne
Blood on my hands again
Blood on my hands again
Blood on my hands again
From the darkest corners of the world with
(Demons, twisted suffering)
They tried to walk amongst the livin’, corrupt the kings that
(Dreams of nothing)
They see the man in the shadows, lights a fire, lookin’ for the one
Ridin’ on the pale horse, blade and head (Death has come)
Fear the reaper when you see his face, in this case, you’re lost
Wicked dreams of glory, tell me what your soul has cost
I’m the vengeance of the meek, with the hammer of the people
I’m the tip of the spear thrown by God (At the evil)
As I move upon the wicked through the mist with one objective
Send ’em back into the fire, then you gon’ be resurrected
Sickened soul taken quickly from the shell (From the Rollie)
Angels cryin’ up in Heaven for the path that I have chosen
As the wind blows swiftly, fire rises in the night
With my blade takin’ flight, souls are reachin’ for the light
Your favorite beat, go ‘head and get it
Tell ’em I’m the one who sent you
If the one who brings the rain and pose as evil that you men do
Heard the sounds of the trumpets blown, a king rises to the throne
God saved the king unless God wants me to bring him home
Stick the razor’s edge in the light, my blade is clean
Until it’s pressed against your neck, and now you’re eternal dreamin’
And only God could judge me for those things I had to clean away
The tidal wave, it came and washed every single thing away
And as I stray, lookin’ for the day the maker makes a plan
I’ll be lurkin’ in the shadow with your blood upon my hands
All you killers Devil’s gotten
I’m the guardian on this throne
Blood on my hands again
Blood on my hands again
Blood on my hands again
Blood on my hands, hands, hands
