Grow lights for seed starting or indoor growing have a large footprint in the gardening market. Some of these are priced astronomically!
You do not need “grow lights”. Basic lights will work as good, or BETTER as long as you choose the right ones. LED lights are my favorite because they use less energy making them cheaper to run, and they don’t produce heat that will burn plants. No more leggy seedlings!

Dutch bucket hydroponics is a great way to grow large and long-term plants. In this video, I’ll show you step-by-step how to build a dutch bucket system.
This system can be used both indoors and outdoors. If you plan to use the system outdoors, it works best in a greenhouse or in an area where rain can’t easily contaminate the system.
If you’d like to know how dutch bucket systems work, scroll down for a brief explanation.
NOTE: In the video, I refer to using 1/2″ rubber grommets. I should have said 3/4″ inner diameter rubber grommets commonly used for 1/2″ PVC pipe. The link below to the grommets are the correct size for this build. If you’re buying grommets from another source, you’ll want to use 3/4″ inner diameter rubber grommets.

❓ How Dutch Bucket Hydroponics Works ❓
A Dutch bucket system is a simple recirculating drip irrigation system. A reservoir holds nutrient solution. Inside that reservoir is a pump that’s connected to an irrigation line. When the pump cycles it pushes nutrient solution up into drip or irrigation tubing that flows into the buckets.
The Dutch buckets have a drain positioned about 2” above the bottom of the bucket. When the water level reaches the drain, it flows into a drain pipe and recirculates back into the reservoir. That 2” drain position in the bucket maintains a small reserve of water in every bucket at all times.
Coarse media like perlite works well with this standing reserve of water since it won’t wick up large amounts of moisture. This reserve of water in each bucket also acts as a nice failsafe to keep plants healthy in case of a pump failure.

What We’re Building
The system we’re building is commonly called a dwc hydroponic system. DWC stands for deep water culture.
Most people look for DWC systems without knowing the method is actually just water culture hydroponics. The addition of the word “deep” just means the system is at least 8 to 10 inches deep.
How Does a Deep Water Culture System Work?
A plant is suspended in a net cup above the nutrient solution in the reservoir. The reservoir in this case is a bucket. As the root system of the plant grows it relies on dissolved oxygen in the water to survive.
In the system we’re building, an air pump (aerator) oxygenates the water. Without this aeration, the nutrient solution (water) would become stagnant and a fully submerged root system would die.
Working and spending more time at home has recently gotten me more interested in gardening and growing my own vegetables. It has also been a pretty expensive past-time given the amount of materials, soil, and water needed to upkeep and grow a garden.
I looked into cheaper alternatives and started learning more about hydroponics, however, that in itself is also pretty expensive to start. I figured I could build my own hydroponics system on my own for much cheaper.
This is part one of a short series where I start my very first attempt at a hydroponics garden build.

Ebb and flow (also known as ‘flood and drain’) is a simple hydroponic growing method that’s cheap and easy to set-up and relatively hassle-free to maintain. Growers enjoy bigger yields over hand-watering and are freed up from the chore of daily manual irrigation. We explain everything you need to know about ebb and flow in under six minutes – check this out!
Seven minutes—packed with info! We take a look at Grodan A-OK starter plugs (stonewool cubes), Grodan Delta 3-inch and 4-inch rockwool blocks, Hugo 6-inch blocks, Big Mamma 8-inch blocks, Unislabs and loose fill rockwool growing media. We cover pre-soaking rockwool, adjusting pH, charging up with hydroponic nutrients, hardening off seedlings and cuttings, and transplanting into soil and soilless media such as coco coir.
